Power BI Features
Business intelligence solutions are designed to help organisations derive insights from their data. By making good use of business intelligence tools and business intelligence software, employees within an organisation can make important decisions based on facts, as opposed to suppositions or instincts. With accurate tools like Microsoft Power BI, organisations that use this multi-functional program have access to regular new updates and features which can be hugely advantageous to a business.
Some of the benefits of Power BI updates are below:
- They improve your user experience
- Interface updates can help users to learn new methods of navigation, viewing and user collaboration
- Extracting critical insights from data (as volumes and complexity increase) becomes easier
- They help you take timely and proactive actions and make key decisions
- These allow employees to effectively explore data, find patterns and assess future outcomes to drive business results
For context, please revisit our previous Power BI update articles:
Previous Power BI updates have included several enhancements in Power Query AI functions, Q&A visuals, xViz visuals, numerous connectors and various template apps that are either generally available or in preview mode. Many of the 2020 updates will see some features currently in preview mode become generally available, and many new unannounced preview features rolled out as the year progresses.
Here, we take a look at some of the upcoming features to expect from Power BI in 2020. Please be advised that delivery timelines may change and some of these features may be subject to alterations.
Power BI will eventually have the option to view user activity across dashboards and reports in the admin portal in more detail. Admins will be provided with views of Power BI artifacts (e.g. contents of workspaces) that a tenant (an organisation that’s using the SaaS application) is viewing and using. This is so admins can understand user activity and manage content, as well as provide user support.
In a follow-up to the March preview of XMLA read-only support which Power BI Premium began supporting third-party business intelligence tools, Microsoft will now be allowing full read/write access to datasets.
The Power BI tab in Microsoft Teams will be updated to provide new features, including improved browsing experiences, workspace experience support, Power BI app content support, B2B Guest user support and more. Power BI users will also find it easier to find and install recommended Template Apps they may need in AppSource.
Power BI Desktop
Power BI Desktop users can change common formatting settings very quickly and easily. In an attempt to align more closely with other Microsoft Office applications as well as user expectations, Microsoft will be providing a way to update the most commonly changed settings without the need for creating an individual JSON file.
Power BI Embedded
Developers will eventually be able to provide users with an API where exporting Power BI data can be completed, with reports exported in PDF and JPEG formats as well as PowerPoint files. There will be both interactive and non-interactive modes of exportation.
The Power BI decomposition tree is an AI visualisation which enables users to break down metrics by dimension, to understand the impact of certain factors on a specific KPI. In 2020, dimensions can be selected by app users or Power BI can automatically find the most relevant splits, with the app conducting root cause analysis.
Power BI reports that are embedded in internal web portals or applications will eventually gain a feature that will allow users to view (and embed) ArcGIS map visualisations.
Power BI Mobile
Any Power BI Android app users will eventually be able to create app shortcuts, which can subsequently be used to access Power BI content directly from their mobile device. HoloLens v2 will be getting an update to its overall user experience as well.
Not only this, but users will be able to view Report Server reports directly in the Power BI Windows app.
Power BI Report Server
The January 2020 Power BI Report Server update will include various modelling and visualisation upgrades, data source connection API support and the ability for users to export data to Microsoft Excel from a tabular visual in PBIRS.
