As business intelligence continues to evolve, these updates serve to make our Power BI consultancy services more inclusive as well as incorporate many of the enhancements into our extensive courses, on anything from data visualisation to data analysis expression and modelling.
We are always looking at ways to improve our business intelligence solutions, and we would be delighted to speak to you in more detail if you feel we can be of help.

The February Power BI update includes improvements in:
- Dataset management
- Template Apps
- Data preparation and connectivity
One highly-anticipated update to Power BI is the incremental refresh feature. What was once exclusive to Power BI Premium, now is supported for the Power BI Pro license.
This feature offers improvements to large datasets in the Power BI service. Only data that has changed in a dataset needs to be refreshed, and now incremental refreshes ensure a faster process. The less data there is to refresh, the less memory consumed. Also, datasets do not have to maintain long-running connections to volatile source systems.
Power BI Desktop now includes a preview-only version of a hierarchical slicer visual. While there has been one in AppSource for a while, there was considerable demand for a built-in visual to support hierarchies.
Updates to the ribbon
Some notable Power BI Desktop updates include the enhancements to the ribbon. There are new title bar updates as well as the inclusion of keytips, which users can use to navigate and select buttons in the title bar and ribbon. Users also have the option to choose custom format strings in the ribbon as well as the Properties pane.
New DAX functions
There are new data analysis expression functions to announce. They are called:
These DAX functions return the first or last value of an expression that isn’t blank, after evaluating an expression filtered by the sorted values of a column.
Below is a list of the new Power BI visuals:
- Funnel and pyramid chart (xViz) – this can be viewed in both default and 3D mode and comes with various conditional formatting
- OEE dashboard (3AG Systems) – you can use this visual to track KPIs such as availability, quality and performance.
- Organisation chart (MAQ Software) – this is helpful for display hierarchical information and relationships between different entities.
- PI VIZpack (PQ Systems) – consisting of eight process improvement charts that provide an easy way to evaluate and visualise behaviour and performance.
- Zebra BI table and chart updates – these offer new features, include custom themes, and more.
There are new additions to the Power BI templates collection via AppSource. There are new template applications for Microsoft 365 usage analytics, an NFL analytics app (by P3) as well as new Power BI template application for QuickBooks, Xero and WorkflowMax.
Data Preparation and Connectivity
Non-admin support for query diagnostics
Some users were unable to run diagnostics if they had no admin rights. With the new update, you have the option to support tracing without the need for admin access.
Several connectors are new, or generally available:
- MicroStrategy connector
- FHIR connector
- Factset connector
- TIBCO connector
- Jamf Pro connector
- Asana connector
